TV Troubleshooting & Tips

Before you replace your TV, find out what’s actually wrong.

Most TV faults look worse than they are. A screen full of lines, a picture that won’t appear, a screen that’s too dark — customers often assume the television is finished. Frequently it isn’t.

We’ve been repairing televisions since 1987 as an authorised Panasonic Service Centre in Kepong, KL. These guides come from what we actually see on the bench every week — for Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Skyworth and Philips TVs.

Problem 1: TV Has No Picture (Black Screen)

TV turns on, you can hear sound, but the screen is completely black?

This is one of the most common problems we see. Here’s what’s likely causing it:

Backlight Failure — Most Common Cause

The backlight is what lights up your TV screen. When the backlight LEDs fail, the screen goes completely black even though everything else still works.

Signs:

  • Sound is working normally
  • Screen is completely black
  • If you shine a torchlight at the screen, you can faintly see the picture

What to do: Backlight replacement. This is a common and affordable repair at Laser Electronics.

T-Con Board Failure

The T-Con board controls the image display. When it fails, the screen goes blank or shows distorted images.

Signs: Screen is black or shows strange patterns even though the TV is powered on.

Wrong Input Source — Try This First!

Sometimes the TV is simply on the wrong input.

Try this:

  1. Press Source or Input on your remote
  2. Select the correct HDMI or AV input
  3. Make sure your HDMI cable is firmly connected

If this doesn’t fix it, the problem is internal and needs professional repair.

Open Cell Panel Damage

If the panel itself is damaged, the screen will show nothing. Laser Electronics specialises in open cell LCD panel repair — we can often repair the panel itself at a fraction of replacement cost.

Problem 2: TV Screen Has Lines (Vertical or Horizontal Lines)

Seeing lines running across or down your TV screen?

This is the most common reason customers come to us. The good news — most screen line problems are repairable.

Vertical Lines (Lines Running Up and Down)

What causes it:

  • T-Con board failure — the board controlling the columns of your screen has failed
  • Loose or damaged ribbon cable — the thin flat cable connecting the panel to the board
  • Driver IC failure — a chip bonded to the edge of the panel has failed

Horizontal Lines (Lines Running Across the Screen)

What causes it:

  • Open cell panel damage — rows of pixels on the panel have failed
  • Driver IC on the panel edge has failed
  • Physical impact — TV was knocked or dropped

What Is Open Cell Panel Repair?

Most service centres will tell you the panel needs to be replaced — which can cost almost as much as a new TV.

Laser Electronics is different.

We are one of the very few service centres in Malaysia equipped with a professional laser machine and bonding machine. This allows us to repair failed driver ICs, fix vertical and horizontal lines at the source, and restore damaged panels — saving customers hundreds to thousands of Ringgit.

Problem 3: TV Screen Too Dark or Dim (No Brightness)

Is your TV screen very dim, or the picture looks faint and dark?

Backlight LED Failure

The most common cause of a dim screen. When backlight LEDs partially fail, the screen becomes very dark.

Signs:

  • Screen is dim or very dark
  • You can still faintly see the picture
  • Sound works normally
  • Getting worse over time

Check Your TV Settings First

  1. Go to Settings → Picture
  2. Turn OFF Eco Mode or Power Saving Mode
  3. Turn OFF Auto Brightness
  4. Set Backlight to maximum

If the screen is still dark after adjusting settings, the problem is hardware.

Should You Repair or Buy a New TV?

We give every customer an honest assessment:

  • Repair cost less than 50% of new TV → Repair is worth it
  • TV less than 8 years old → Almost always worth repairing
  • Screen lines or dim screen → Usually repairable
  • Open cell panel issue → We can repair — saves you a lot

We give you a free diagnosis and honest quote before any work begins. No fix, no charge.
