Washing Machine Error Codes & Troubleshooting Guide

Washing Machine Not Working? Here’s What the Error Code Means.

When your washing machine stops and shows an error code, most people panic. But error codes are actually good news — the machine is telling you exactly what’s wrong.

At Laser Electronics Enterprise in Kepong, KL, we repair washing machines from all major brands every week. Here’s what the most common error codes mean — and what you should do.

Panasonic Washing Machine Error Codes

Panasonic is one of the most common brands we service as an Authorised Panasonic Service Centre.

U11 — Water Not Draining

The machine cannot drain the water out.

Common causes:

  • Drain hose is kinked or blocked
  • Drain filter is clogged with lint or debris
  • Drain pump has failed

Try this first: Check the drain hose at the back — make sure it’s not bent. Clean the filter (usually behind a small panel at the front bottom of the machine).

If it persists: The drain pump may need replacement — call us.

U12 — Water Not Filling

The machine is not getting enough water.

Common causes:

  • Water tap is not fully open
  • Inlet hose is kinked
  • Inlet valve has failed
  • Water pressure is too low

Try this first: Make sure the water tap behind the machine is fully open. Check the inlet hose is not bent.

U14 — Door Not Closed Properly

The machine detects the door is not fully shut.

Try this first: Open and firmly close the door. Check nothing is caught in the door seal.

If it persists: The door latch or door sensor has failed — needs professional repair.

U13 — Machine Vibrating Too Much

The machine is vibrating excessively and cannot continue the spin cycle safely.

Common causes:

  • Laundry is not evenly spread inside the drum
  • Using a laundry bag for normal clothes — the bag causes clothes to bunch together on one side
  • Machine is not sitting level on the floor — one or more feet are not touching the ground
  • Too many heavy items washed together (e.g. jeans + towels)

Try this first:

  1. Open the machine and spread the clothes evenly around the drum
  2. If using a laundry bag — remove the bag and wash clothes loose, or use the laundry bag setting if available
  3. Check the machine is level — adjust the feet at the bottom until all four are firmly on the floor
  4. Restart the spin cycle

Tip: Avoid washing one very heavy item alone (e.g. one blanket). Add a few towels to balance the load.

U21 — Unbalanced Load

The laundry is unevenly distributed in the drum.

Try this first: Open the machine, rearrange the clothes evenly, and restart.

H01 — Water Level Sensor Error

The water level sensor is not reading correctly — the signal is out of the expected range.

What to do: Switch off the machine, unplug it, plug back in and restart. If it continues, the water level sensor or PCB needs replacement — call a technician.

H05 — Memory Error

The machine’s internal memory (EEPROM) has an error.

What to do: Unplug the machine and plug back in. If it persists, the PCB needs to be replaced — professional repair required.

H09 — Communication Error

Internal communication between components has failed.

What to do: Unplug and restart. If it persists, PCB replacement needed.

H12 — Safety Switch Error

The lid safety switch is open when the lid is closed, or the switch has disconnected.

Try this first: Open and firmly close the lid. Check nothing is blocking the lid from closing fully.

If it persists: The safety switch connector or switch itself needs checking — call a technician.

H17 — Thermistor (Temperature Sensor) Error

The ECONAVI thermistor (temperature sensor) is giving an abnormal reading.

What to do: Unplug the machine and restart. If it persists, the thermistor or PCB needs replacement.

H20 — Heater Thermistor Error

The heating element thermistor is not detecting temperature change during heating.

What to do: Professional repair required — thermistor or PCB replacement needed.

H21 — Overflow Error

Too much water has entered the machine — the water level has reached overflow level.

What to do: Switch off immediately. Do not use the machine. Call a technician — the inlet valve or water level sensor needs checking.

H23 — Heater Relay Circuit Error

The heater relay circuit is not working correctly.

What to do: Professional repair required — heater unit or PCB needs checking.

H42 — Overheating Error

The machine temperature has exceeded 95°C — dangerously hot.

What to do: Switch off immediately. Unplug and allow to cool completely before calling a technician. Do not use until repaired.

H51 — Motor Overload Error

The motor is overloaded or locked — it cannot spin the drum properly.

Common causes:

  • Drum is overloaded with too many clothes
  • A piece of clothing is jammed in the drum
  • Motor has failed

Try this first: Remove some clothes and try rotating the drum by hand. If it won’t turn freely, call a technician.

H52 — High Voltage Error

The incoming electrical voltage is too high (445V or above).

What to do: Do not use the machine. Call an electrician to check your home voltage, then call us to check the machine.

H53 — Low Voltage Error

The incoming electrical voltage is too low (below 189.9V).

What to do: Check if other appliances in your home are working normally. If voltage is normal, the PCB needs replacement.

H57 — Overcurrent Error

The motor or heater is drawing too much current — possible short circuit.

What to do: Switch off immediately. Professional repair required — motor unit or PCB needs checking.
